Most of the people at my gym have at least halfway decent gym etiquette, but some of them are minor nuisances. I’m not sure who drives this blue Toyobaru, but the guy with the orange one is a major toolbag.
Orange Toyobaru guy may or may not be an employee of the gym. I don’t think he is, but half the time he’s here he appears to be personal training someone, and the other half the time he’s here with his “I’m a power lifter” female friends who are well, I’m being diplomatic here....not really power lifters. Dude acts very serious about having these random folks do jump rope and other random exercise combinations while he takes turns doing the same thing. It’s all Very Serious Business with this guy and his little entourage, taking up space and playing shitty music from his phone’s speaker.
There’s another Toyobaru, a tan one, that belongs to a girl who is very serious about her squats, and equally serious about taking 5 minute breaks between sets while she sits IN the motherfucking squat rack messing with her phone. Last week, she was looking to use a bench press, asked a dude on one of the benches if he was done soon, and he said no but she could work in. I happened to be almost done with my bench pressing so I told her I had 2 sets left, then took the plates off the bar, and did my usual wipe down of the bench. She said, “you didn’t have to do all that,” to which I replied, “if we lose our gym etiquette, we’re no better than savages.”
I don’t think she got the point.
UPDATE: Look what the fuck was in the parking lot on my way out to my car. I had already moved on from weights to cardio when she arrived, thankfully.

The cars are cool little basic no frills sports cars in a world of CUVs, but they certainly attract a certain type of crowd. The flat-brim vaping crowd.

Fuck. That. Noise. I thought most gyms specifically forbade this. Also why they blast music themselves so you can’t play anything over it unless you have headphones. I have only seen someone do this once or twice in a tiny apartment gym when nobody was there, as soon as someone came to that area they switched it off, definitely should be banned in any big box ym. Inconsiderate, indecent and total lack of common courtesy. Wear a fucking headphone you degenerate.
yes, I am angry.

I have in various moments of testosterone-clouded rage considered walking up to him and, without saying anything, picking up his phone and throwing it across the gym. But that wouldn't fit with my jolly hippie image I need to maintain.

this is why I’m glad we have a gym available at work. we’re all just a bunch of pasty engineers and line workers doing what we can to make sure our sedentary jobs don’t get the best of us. no douchebags, no meatheads.

It’s just common curtesy that if you’re in public and you want to listen to music you do it with headphones.

The best/worst thing about a toyobaru is that the Look more expensive than they are at least from the outside . Which means it’s an easily accessible way to look more successful than you are. I’m by no means saying that’s why all buyer buy them, but it’s why some do.
Ask the average person how much one costs and I’m betting their guess will be closer to Mustang GT than Hyundia Veloster.

It's the GTR/M4/Lambo guys at my gym that do shit like this. Grab 12 dumbells for dropsets, throw em all around the floor, then loudly talk to each other in between sets while people actually try to lift. I go to lifetime, which is pretty expensive, so thankfully there aren't too many people like that, but still. The worst part is these guys are always soft as hell too. What's the point of being able to bench 300 or squat 500 if you still have your beer belly from college?

There’s a Lifetime a couple miles farther away from my house than this Gold's. I don't want to pay the extra. That shit is pricey!

That would be ideal, since he would still know how I feel about his music, but wouldn’t have a reason to try to get me to buy him a new phone. If it did break, I’d be like, “O h, that was an iPhone X? I hear Amazon sells the Moto G6 for cheap, you should check it out."

Ehh there’s a lot of fancy cars rolling around DC, I don’t think anyone around here is giving a Toyobaru a second look. Unless they're some kind of car nerd, and it's modified.

I’m pretty good at tuning everyone else out while I’m working out. My biggest annoyance is the locker room. I seem to always end up with lockers near all the guys that immediately lose all concept of personal space once they enter a locker room. I can't stand being crowded.

My old gym in Wisconsin had racquetball courts, and a league. There were lots of pot bellied middle aged Wisconsin dudes hanging out naked in the locker room talking about their matches.
I once witnessed a conversation between racquetball dudes where one of them said, "I don't drink water, all I drink is soda and milk." Barf.

I will never understand the hang-around-in-the-locker-room thing. “ Yes, I enjoy anecdotes punctuated by the smell of feet, please tell me your life’s story.”

There's an old-school bodybuilding gym near me that I go to a few times a year when all of the above things you mentioned start to get to me. I'd love to switch over but LA fitness is 3 minutes away from me

Yeah, I live rightttt next to one so I usually can just walk over. So convenient that it's worth it for me. Allows me to go before peak times which is great.

E very single Toyobaru I see is driven by the same stereotype: Early 20s dude with a weird cap*. It’s weird because almost every other mainstream performance car — even the obnoxious Evo STI — seem to cut across all different age groups. I don’t think the car has any cachet. Probably less than a new Miata. And I think the guys driving them try to compensate for that with stickers and exhausts.
I usually only join the gym in the summers when it’s too hot in my garage. And yes, all the dudes who used to cruise the parking lot in Mustang GTs have suddenly moved to Toyobarus with unnecessarily loud exhausts. It’s like there’s a memo circulating!
*”
weird” here very
broadly
includes anyth
ing with a flat brim, backwards, or cocked to the side. But they absolutely, positively must have headwear on while driving a car with very little headroom

I only have to deal with a couple of jerks that always try to do stuff like walking right into the squat rack with me as I’m about to start a set, sitting on the bench any time I sit up, and even trying to jump on top of me as I’m about to start a set! One of them likes to lay down in the squat rack between my sets, and then complains and tries to hit me when I tell them to move.
I’m not sure whether my cats are trying to injure me or themselves. But at least they’re soft and great to pet while resting!
